I'm too responsible

My younger brother just traded in his 2016 WRX on a low mile 2015 4R unner TRD Pro. He’s the type of guy who things just work out for him. He got a great deal on the trade as well as the 4Runner as those things don’t come up for trade with low miles very often. He also has a “YOLO” attitude and doesn’t sweat the details.

I am much more conservative, especially when it comes to money. I’ve been wanting to take a page out of his book and trade my practical, reliable, and paid-off 11-year old A4 in for a Mustang GT for some time now. Then, the most perfect example shows up for a reasonable price...

Perfect color, low miles, performance package, and within driving distance from Chicago. If there ever a time to be a little irresponsible THIS IS IT! Alas, I cannot force myself to live a little and just do it . I can come up with 100 reasons why this doesn’t make sense and only one reason why it does, because I want it.

I know I’m gonna be one of those guys who’s 75 and buys his first Mustang only to keep it in his garage and wax it once a week.

Go be irresponsible but do it responsibly by only doing it with low amounts of money.

You can’t take it with you when you die, might as well enjoy the ride.

True true, but the thing just keeps ticking. Only 80k miles and no major issues, not even any squeaks or rattles. V6 with a 6MT makes it kindof a unicorn, I just justify giving it up for a car payment.

I feel your pain. I’ve been wanting to sell my Magnum and get something newer as a DD, keeping my Slowstang as a nostalgia toy.  But even though I can easily get a loan and make the payments on a good selection of stuff I really want... I just can’t get myself to do it.

Financial responsibility does pay off in the long run. Just don’t wait til 75, and drive that thing like you stole it when you finally make it yours.

I paid cash for the A4 4 years ago from a friend of mine (its an 07). Living in the city its the perfect mix of nice car to drive, while also crappy enough that street parking is no big deal. I could swing the Mustang with minimal financial pain, but I’m very debt-averse and pinching pennies is a passion of mine.

Keep the A4 for those winters and buy the Mustang for nice weather.

I am surprised you even went for an Audi in that case, LOL. Everyone I know who is like this has a 10 year old Accord/Camry/Civic or at most a Lexus if they wanted “luxury” .

Also, a three pedal addict lol. This car kinda fell into my lap. My Saab had just gotten totaled and my friend who owned the A4 was having a baby and sold it to me for the price Carmax was giving her for the trade on a Volvo wagon . It has some hail damage, so it was extra cheap and I couldn’t find anything better for the price.

This is me every time I think about getting a new DD. I could afford one and I do want one, but I don’t need it. After gas, insurance, car payment, etc., it really adds up. I’ve been renting something fun every few months for little road trips, which seems like a waste, but it’s still a shit ton cheaper than buying a new car. Whatever you do, it will probably be the right decision. If you save for the future, that is always good. Or if you treat yourself now, you have more time to enjoy the thing you like.

If it's paid for, you don't HAVE to get rid of it. Daily the Audi, weekend the stang. Every life needs balance.

My dad’s like you, financially responsible nearly to a fault, which is honestly a great characteristic to have(to a point) and I’m glad he instilled a lot of those values in me. But man. Sometimes its just like “Dad. You make great money. Kids(well, kid there’s just one of me) is through college and fully financially self-sufficient . Stop talking about how you’ve always wanted to do or have x, y, or z. You have the money, because you’ve been so responsible your whole life on top of having a great career, just buy the damn Porsche you always talk about. You don’t have to sell your 14 year old MDX, you can keep that too. ”

My dad sounds a lot like your dad, which is why I am the way I am. He drives a 14 year old Sequoia and his big splurge this year was getting some newer Toyota OEM wheels off craigslist for it.

I’ve always been a great saver because of him. For me, as much as I know having that pretty blue Mustang would make me happy and I could afford it, financial stability is more satisfying.

Its so comforting to have enough money in the bank that if work ever pisses me off too much, I can flip my boss the bird and go be a bum for a year or two.

I went with the compromise and bought the WRX wagon. There’s plenty of room in the back for the kids and plenty of power to have some fun when the kids aren’t on board.

That’s the other factor, I don’t have kids... yet. I’m 30 right now and I know a waterfall of responsibilities are going to present themselves to me in the next few years. This may be my one opportunity to do something stupid like this for a long time.

I think car makers recognize that there’s a market for fun/functional cars, but are trying to fill it with the Grand Cherokee SRT and the Ford Escape RS or whatever other “hot” SUV they can create.

There’s a reason for that - it’s fun AND practical!

I gave up a lot of things when my first child was born, chief among them were hang-gliding, my motorcycle, and SCUBA diving.

There’s a right time in your life for certain activities. Some would argue that any time is a good time, but I know what it’s like to grow up without a parent and it sucks. Especially so for those kids who lost a parent due to them doing something stupid.

Do it while you can without feeling guilty.

Has depreciation been overly favorable to mustangs? I cannot imagine it has and I think you could negotiate that price down $1000+. It’s all about priorities, just make sure you are spending/saving as you see fit!
